Over the years, we have been presented with numerous engineering challenges, as commercial designs become more complex. We meet these challenges with innovative solutions, in an effort to preserve the architect’s vision, while maintaining structural integrity. Eric Ericsson's Restaurant, built in 1994, presented us with the challenge of building on the existing Ventura Pier without adding new costly foundation piles. Our solution was to use Styrofoam in the 18” concrete foundation to keep the weight at a minimum. The existing wood pile foundation was strengthened with steel X bracing. Glass windows for a panoramic ocean view were a critical part of the design, so we recommended a 3D steel frame to resist wind & seismic loads.
